The EMAJ Boutique Hotel was created after the acquisition and restoration of a historic architectural icon of Guimarães, the building of Banco Nacional Ultramarino – national bank, having been preserved interior and exterior details, in order to be transformed into a Charming Hotel, synonym for luxury, relax and comfort, in a town where you can breathe history and culture.
Our Hotel is located in Largo do Toural, the heart of the city and only a few meters from the historical center of Guimarães - World Heritage of UNESCO and the European Capital of Culture in 2012 - a place full of attractions to discover.
Due to the central location of EMAJ you can easily visit the Castle of Guimarães, the set of one of the greatest battles of Dom Afonso Henriques - first king of Portugal, and the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança, two important places in the Portuguese history. Later you can enjoy the sunset at Largo da Oliveira. In addition, you will also get to know the most diverse churches of varying architectural styles and religious representations of the life of Christ and Our Lady of Fatima present in the city, references in the roadmaps of Religious Tourism.
You may also enjoy visit the Vila Flor Cultural Centre and the Platform of Arts and Culture, both near the hotel and stage of various cultural events such as the recognized Guimarães Jazz.
All this without forgetting a mandatory ascent to Mount Penha, via cable car or by the existing trails, where you will have fantastic views over the city.
In this building of the XIX Century, several commercial activities were carried out. Initially the famous Parisian Pastry is highlighted, after which the Banco Nacional Ultramarino - national bank, was replaced until 1982, when it is acquired by the current owner.
In 2014, after an extensive intervention, the building was transformed into a boutique hotel unit. The building, with its renovation, was importante for the revitalization of Largo do Toural, continuing to be the main square of Guimarães.
